POSITION DESCRIPTION

Function:

 

Under general direction, performs skilled mechanical work in the maintenance of Fire Department vehicles and equipment.

Essential Function:

The information contained in this classification specification is a representative sample of essential and other functions performed in this classification. Specific essential functions are identified for position recruitment or other administrative procedures.

Examples of Duties:

Responsible for the maintenance, repair, and servicing of all assigned Olympia Fire Department equipment. Maintain, repair, and service gas and diesel fire engines, including: drive train, running gear components, pumps, valves, piping, control systems, pumping engines hydraulics, aerial ladders, medic units, aid units, and department automobiles. Rebuild bodies; design and build compartments within vehicles; and modify existing systems. Maintain high and low pressure compressors and storage systems. Maintain a standby power plant to ensure continuous use of department buildings and radios during an emergency. Maintain and repair hose nozzles, generator sets, chain saws, lighting components, ladders, axes and portable pumps. Conduct annual pump services test. Coordinate Underwriters Laboratory testing of aerial devices. Prepare an annual cost estimate to maintain, repair and/or replace assigned equipment. Prepare specifications for new equipment to be purchased by the Department. Maintain breathing apparatus and charging systems. Maintain department radio equipment. Design and build modifications to existing equipment. Train and supervise firefighters on equipment repair jobs. Maintain all necessary equipment and vehicles records; ensure engines and equipment are properly tested and meet all required standards.

Contacts:

The Fire Department Mechanic has frequent contact with Department equipment users, firefighters working on equipment repair projects, fire equipment manufacturers, and department administrators. Contacts are generally for the purpose of supervision and/or information sharing. Contacts require the ability to communicate technical information, detailed instructions, and exact specifications clearly and concisely. Communication for the purpose of eliciting necessary information concerning equipment operating characteristics and problems is required for position success and the safety of equipment users.

Supervision:

Direct firefighters and/or mechanic assistants when assigned to equipment repair projects.

Accountability:

The Fire Department Mechanic is accountable for the effective operation of all assigned Fire Department equipment.

Working Conditions:

 

The position involves considerable physical activity with exposure to safety hazards normally associated with repair work on automobiles and heavy equipment. While most work is done inside a shop, on occasion the employee makes repairs to equipment in the field at the scene of a fire or other emergency, which may involve exposure to hazardous chemicals and/or conditions.

QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Extensive knowledge of the practices, methods, tools, and materials used in the maintenance of fire equipment and vehicles.

Extensive knowledge of the operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines.

Occupational hazards and safety precautions pertinent to equipment repair work.

?

Washington State Vertical Standards for Firefighters.

?

Skill in:

Federal Ambulance Specifications and State of Washington Ambulance Rules and Regulations.? Use and care of tools, equipment, and materials used in maintenance and repair work.

Ability to

:
Diagnoses and assessment of complex mechanical, hydraulic and electronic systems.? Establish and maintain the confidence of firefighters in the quality of repairs/maintenance of life-saving equipment.

Diagnose vehicle and equipment defects and to complete repairs in an efficient, effective manner.

Express ideas and technical information clearly and concisely.

Demonstrate equipment operations and proper repair techniques to individuals with varying levels of expertise.

Drive and operate various types of fire equipment, including: pumps, aerial ladders, compressor systems, and generator sets.

Complete acetylene and arc welds with proficiency.

Education/Experience:

High school diploma or GED required; additional college-level or vocational training in heavy duty equipment maintenance and repair preferred. Two years journey level experience in the repair and maintenance of fire apparatus or closely related heavy-duty equipment; and the ability to demonstrate proficiency required. Additional formal training directly related to equipment as currently used by the Olympia Fire Department may substitute for required experience depending on overall qualifications and proficiency demonstration.

Special Requirements:

Valid Washington State Driver's License at time of appointment. Possession of Washington State Commercial Driver's License (Class B with air brakes endorsement) as prescribed by RCW is a condition of continuing employment.
