SENIOR EQUIPMENT MECHANIC

DEFINITION

Under direction, perform repair, maintenance, and modification of gasoline and diesel

powered vehicles and equipment. Incumbents may oversee, monitor, and/or direct the

work of lower level personnel.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The Senior Equipment Mechanic is the lead or specialist level in the Equipment

Mechanic series. Incumbents serving in a lead capacity provide direction to lower level

staff including assigning, directing, and reviewing the work of staff and work on

specialized projects or equipment containing a high number of complex and difficult

tasks and assignments, and/or requiring specialized knowledge. Positions at this level

are distinguished from those in the lower classification of Equipment Mechanic

Specialist by the independence with which they perform their duties of handling the

most difficult and complex work and performing leadwork. This class is distinguished

from the class of Equipment Mechanic Supervisor in that the latter serves as the full

supervisor of incumbents in the lower levels of the series.

Fire Apparatus Mechanic Option:

Senior Equipment Mechanic in the Fire Department performs skilled

mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of a variety of gasoline

and diesel powered fire apparatus, vehicles, and equipment.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification.

However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level.

Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all the duties

listed.

Assign and review the work of Equipment Mechanics and related staff in the

equipment maintenance records, and driver complaints.

Determine service and repair work to be done according to equipment condition,

equipment.

Diagnose difficult problems regarding repair, maintenance, and servicing of

ancillary tools and equipment.

Repair and maintain gasoline and diesel powered vehicles and equipment, and

equipment; train employees in shop safety and safe use of equipment.

Train employees in the repair, maintenance, and service of automobiles and

Coordinate pick up and delivery of equipment.

Perform smog and diesel smoke tests.

Inventory and order parts, supplies, and tools.

Repair and fabricate equipment parts using acetylene and arc welding tools.

Maintain equipment maintenance and service records, inventories records

including testing of new and newly repaired apparatus and equipment.

May perform or assist in the performance of annual apparatus and vehicle tests,

May perform periodic inspections of equipment

Maintain safety records.

Write reports.

Weld, fabricate, and paint repaired equipment.

May perform emergency road service on apparatus and equipment.

Oversee unit operations in the absence of the supervisor.

Perform related duties as assigned.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

NOTE: The level and scope of the following knowledge and abilities are related to

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience:

Two (2) years of full-time experience as an Equipment Mechanic Specialist with

the City of Folsom.

OR

Four (4) years of full-time, increasingly responsible full-time experience in

diagnosing, repairing, and adjusting gasoline and diesel powered vehicles and

equipment.

Substitution:

College or vocational education in automotive mechanics may substitute for one

(1) year of the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

License, Certification, Registration Requirements:

The following are required within six (6) months of employment:

Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a disability will be evaluated

on a case-by-case basis.

Possession of, or ability to obtain and retain, a California Class B driver license.

Possession of, or ability to obtain, a forklift certification.

Possession of, or ability to obtain, an air brake certification.

At the option of the City, persons hired into this class may be required to either possess

at entry or obtain within specified time limits, designated licenses, certificates or

specialized education and training relevant to the area of assignment. Additional

requirements may include, but are not limited to the following:

Possession of, or ability to obtain, an A/C refrigerant license.

Possession of, or ability to obtain and retain, a California Class B driver license.

Physical Requirements:

Work is performed in a shop environment, with occasional work outside in various types

of weather; occasional work in confined spaces. (1) Mobility: occasional standing,

walking, sitting, bending, squatting, working in awkward positions; occasional

performance of heavy manual labor. (2) Lifting: occasional lifting up to 100 pounds. (3)

Vision: constant use of overall vision; use of vision to identify mechanical problems;

occasional use of color vision. (4) Dexterity: occasional grasping, holding, and

reaching; occasional use of touch only to perform work. (5) Hearing/Talking: frequent

hearing and talking in person; use of hearing to recognize mechanical problems. (6)

Emotional/Psychological: frequent coworker contact; occasional working alone. (7)

Environmental: frequent exposure to loud and very loud noise, moving parts, and

vehicles; occasional exposure to chemicals, fumes, and other environmental

substances.
