WILTON FIRE DEPARTMENT

APPARATUS SUPERVISOR (MECHANIC)

The Town of Wilton seeks an Apparatus Supervisor for its Fire Department serving a population in excess of 18,000 in lower Fairfield County.

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: This position is responsible for maintaining all Fire Department apparatus, appliances, and other related equipment in a state of immediate readiness on a 24 hour per day basis and for all related budgetary and clerical duties pertaining to the Fire Department. Work is performed primarily in the main Fire Station. However, work at fire scenes, at the second Fire Station located in North Wilton, and on the road to address equipment emergencies is also required. Additionally, travel may be required both within state and to other states to view potential and actual apparatus and other related equipment purchases.

MAJOR ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

? Assist in drafting specifications of apparatus chassis and driveline components for all new vehicles and staff vehicles whose specifications are primarily set by the Fire Department administration;

? Maintain a preventive maintenance program for all apparatus, appliances, and other related equipment in compliance with applicable NFPA Standards;

? Perform specialized service work on engines, transmissions, drivetrains, electrical systems, fire pumps, and hydraulic pumps;

? Oversee annual service and performance tests of all fire pumps and equipment;

? Develop specialized procedures for safe and efficient operation of equipment not outlined in operating manuals and impart this information to Fire Department personnel;

? Maintain a recording system so all budgetary, planning, purchasing, and maintenance histories can be properly evaluated for future use;

? On 24-hour call back to respond to working fire or other emergencies to provide immediate apparatus or equipment servicing or repairs;

? Perform minor building maintenance and repair duties, including coordinate with vendors for service of HVAC systems and other mechanical systems for both Fire Stations;

? Monitor medical oxygen inventory;

? Service and repair of breathing air compressor;

? Service building air compressors at both Fire Stations;

? Supervise mechanical operation of fire apparatus at emergency scenes and takes corrective action when and where appropriate; and

? Assist Community Emergency Response Team (“CERT”) with equipment and vehicles.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

? High school diploma or equivalent;

? Valid Connecticut CDL license required;

? Thorough knowledge of fire apparatus, pumps, aerial devices, multiplex electrical systems, hydraulic rescue tool systems, power take off and transmission equipment, and components;

? Certified Emergency Vehicle Technician (F1 Maintenance, Inspection and Testing of Fire Apparatus, F3 Pumps, and F5 Aerial Apparatus) certification at time of or within six (6) months of start of employment; and

? Thorough knowledge of fire and rescue (minimum Connecticut Firefighter I, Certified Pump Operator, and EMT Certificate) preferred.

Starting salary: $66,413 to $72,995 DOQ.

JOB LOCATION AND EQUIPMENT USED: Work is performed primarily in the main Fire Station. However, work at fire scenes, at the second Fire Station located in North Wilton, and on the road to address equipment emergencies also required. Additionally, travel may be required both within state and to other states to view potential and actual apparatus and other related equipment purchases. Equipment used: computer, calculator, and copier as well as all necessary tools and equipment necessary to the maintenance of all Fire Department apparatus, appliances, and other related equipment, such as hand tools, vehicle lift system as well as various types of electric, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

? Assist in specifications of apparatus chassis and driveline components for all new vehicles and staff vehicles whose specifications are primarily set by the Fire Department administration;

? Supervise mechanical operation of fire apparatus at emergency scenes and takes corrective action when and where appropriate;

? Assist Community Emergency Response Team (“CERT”) with equipment and vehicles;

? Represent the Fire Department and AFSCME Local 1303-160 members on the Town’s Safety and Health Committee; and

? Perform related duties assigned by the Chief and/or Deputy Chief as required and/or necessary.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS:

? Ability to communicate and work effectively with Fire Department personnel and the public;

? Ability to analyze and interpret Federal Regulations and National Fire Protection Association (“NFPA”) Standards pertaining to all motor vehicles and emergency equipment;

? Ability to prepare concise and accurate reports, requisitions, and correspondence;

? Ability to read and interpret vehicle specifications, blueprints, schematics, and related documents;

? Proficiency in standard computer operations; and

? Position requires the ability to perform a reasonable level of physical labor associated with the maintenance and repair of major components of staff vehicles and heavy duty trucks.
