Description of Work

Position Definition: Under the general direction of the Fire Mechanic, the Assistant Mechanic shall be responsible for the maintenance and general repair of all Fire Department apparatus and related equipment and shall maintain the records of all maintenance and inventory of tools and equipment.

Example of Duties: Assignments include, but are not limited to the maintenance and repair of Fire Apparatus and specialized equipment, fixtures and appliances, assist in the development of preventive maintenance program for all apparatus and equipment and the preparation of monthly and annual reports to the Chief of the Department. Reports immediately to Superiors any apparatus out of service. Repairs and maintains electric generators and motors. Repairs, rebuilds and maintains heavy gasoline or diesel-powered apparatus and equipment under the supervision of the Fire Mechanic. Performs basic electric or acetylene welding operations. Performs painting, electrical or carpentry work related to equipment and apparatus. Performs necessary maintenance and repair work on all aerial ladders, hydraulic systems, and accessories.

Requisitions adequate amount of spare parts and maintains inventory records of the same. Performs related duties as required. Works under the supervision of the Fire Mechanic.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of the practices, methods, tools and materials used in the maintenance of fire equipment and vehicles. Skill in the use and care of the tools, equipment and materials used in maintenance and repair work.  Ability to use diagnostic computer equipment. Ability to make repairs to fire equipment and apparatus.  Ability to weld and to maintain air-cascade system and refill station (SCBA). Ability to make estimates of time and materials required to complete assignments. Ability to work from plans, sketches, blueprints.

Minimum Qualifications

High School, Trade School or G.E.D. and prior experience repairing gas and diesel engines.

Special Licenses/Certifications AND/OR Supplemental Information

Required Certification: Must possess Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification in general automotive or heavy duty truck repair.

Preferred License(s) or Certificate(s): Possession of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) emergency vehicle certifications (F1) Inspection, Maintenance and Testing of Fire Apparatus. Additional emergency vehicle certifications from the NFPA are desirable. Class A or B State of Connecticut Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is desirable.

This position is a Grade 10.

Note: Employee must supply own hand tools to perform tasks described in job description.
